Back Issue  #54, December

TwoMorrows Publishing presents the 54th issue of its Back Issue magazine that looks back at some of the best comic books and characters from the past.  Included are interviews and articles about the creators that made them.

In issue #54 the theme of the book theme is Liberated Ladies and who better to star on the cover than DC Comics’ Big Barda?

First up is a retrospective of Big Barda, her appearances and black and white and color art from the many artists who have drawn her over the years.  They include Jack Kirby, Michael Golden, John Byrne and others.

Valkyrie was an instant hit when she first appeared in Marvel Comics.  Her appearance in the Hulk and especially The Avengers titles made her a fan favorite.  When she teamed with the Lady Liberators her popularity grew.  She is still a popular character today recently appearing (in altered form) in Marvels’ Ultimates title.

Ms. Marvel was Marvel’s female version of Captain Marvel.  Her Kree spawned powers pitted her against various interstellar villains.  Mystique stole her powers and Ms. Marvel was temporarily absent from comic books until her reappearance in the avengers.

Other female superstars are the woman who both write and draw comic books.  Back Issue looks back over the stellar careers of Barbara Kesel, Gail Simone and Jill Thompson.  Examples of their work are shown throughout the magazine.

A favorite non-super-powered heroine is Starfire. Her short, but pivotal run of issue is examined accompanied with art from various artists.

Without a doubt Marvel Girl/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix is one of the most powerful and popular female characters ever created for comic books.  Since her first appearance in The Uncanny X-Men, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) has been killed and brought back form death more than most other comic book characters in the history of the medium.

Art by jack Kirby, Dave Cockrum, John Byrne complement the extensive article.

Last, but never last, comes She-Hulk.  Introduced in the Bronze Age, She-Hulk is almost as popular as her male counterpart, the Hulk.  Read why the Emerald Giantess is still so popular with fans.

Alter Ego #106, December

Join TwoMorrows Publishing's Alter Ego’s Roy Thomas as he looks back to the Charlton Comics Silver Age.  Charlton Comics’ characters fondly remembered are Sarge steel, Ghosts Of Doctor Graves, Captain Atom, Peacemaker and several others along with various genres like War, Love and Crime comics are showcased.  Did you know that Charlton superheroes were the templates for Alan Moore’s Watchmen?

Charlton editor Dick Giordano’s long and illustrious career, both at Charlton and Dc Comics, is chronicled, accompanied by his art.

Artist Tony Tallarino’s career is traced and fond farewells are given to Marshall Lanz, Tony DiPreta, Jon D’Agostino, Vern Henkel and Lew Sayre Schwartz.  A special section on the Golden Age and specifically Captain Marvel is also featured.

Thor Official Movie Special

My wife and I went to see the Thor movie the other night and while she enjoyed it  I really enjoyed it!   I'm a big fan of Marvel Comics' Thor comic book-especially the Jack Kirby Thor with Walt Simonson's version coming in a distant second.

Jack Kirby captured the hugeness of the vast Asgardian realm with spectacular structures, elaborately dressed warriors, sinister demons and villains and an epic representation of the entire magical scope of the mystical realm.

The Thor movie from Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios tinkers around with Thor's origin a little but the meat of the Thunder God's beginnings are there.

The story opens with Odin (Thor and Loki's father) telling them stories of valor and honor.  Later in their lives the time arrived for Thor to take his rightful place as heir to the throne since he is the elder of the two sons.

When Frost Giants attempt to steal back a relic Thor and the Warriors Three, along with Lady Sif, travel to the Frost Giant's land in order to make them pay for their crime-against the Odin's explicit orders not to.

Thor winds up being banished to Earth for his disobedience and stripped of his power with his hammer separated from him.  And.....well, go see the movie yourself-you won't be disappointed.

Marvel Studios and Disney's Thor Official Movie Special is jam-packed with photos, interviews, quizzes, games, puzzles, a Thor timeline, a special two-part comic book story leading into the film, a Who's Who of characters and much more.  Like Thor, it's big, its bold and it packs plenty of punch!  "For Asgard!"

Think of Make as a modern version of Mechanics Illustrated created for those of us with two left hands, fumbling fingers, less than brilliant minds and technology challenged.  What's even better is it makes learning fun and easy to understand.  My kind of magazine!

Live And Let Die File #1

From 007 Double – O – Seven Magazine Archive Files comes a very special Deluxe Limited Edition Publication examining the very first James Bond file staring Roger Moore in the lead role.

After five successful James Bond films Sean Connery left the franchise, model George Lazenby obtained the role of the suave and debonair British secret agent for one film (with lukewarm results) Connery returned as Bond for one more film (Diamonds Are Forever) and then the role fell to Roger Moore.

TV audiences knew Moore from his TV series, The Saint, as the man-about-town Simon Templar who was almost as suave as James Bond.  It was a perfect fit.  Certain they had a huge ht on their hands and the perfect new James Bond the producers of the Bond series launched Moore as Bond in the action-packed James Bond thriller, Live And Let Die.

Everything clicked in this movie, Moore’s performance (while different than Connery’s and Lazenby’s) captured Bond perfectly, albeit with a little more humor.  Huge sets, spectacular stunts, beautiful women, dastardly villains and a Paul McCartney opening credit song made Live And Let Die a huge success.

In Live And Let Die File #1 fans are given a first-hand look at the production behind the film including a closer look at Bob Dix, the spy who is killed at the Mardi Gras, an in-depth look at the Bond 1973 Documentary, which until recently was thought to have been lost or destroyed, a visual tour of 24 days on location filming in the Bayou and a visual and text explanation on how the spectacular speed boat chase was pulled off.

The groom, played by Greg Gambel, whose wedding is interrupted by Bond and his pursuers, is interviewed about his recollections, readers are given a Taste Of The South and Ruth Kempf who played the befuddled Mrs. Bell whose flight instructions are interrupted by Bond is remembered.

The magazine is jam-packed with never seen before photos, colorful anecdotes, interesting production notes and promotional posters and merchandise photos.

Romero and Gene Simmons-just to name a few) and Fangoria staff writers and editors pick what they consider to be the most horrific, scary and innovative movies of the horror and monster genres.

The James Bond Girls
File #2 The 1970s

I remember when the 1970s arrived and I found out that Sean Connery was returning to the role of James Bond in the next film in the series, Diamonds Are Forever, in 1971.  I was thrilled.  When the film came out I was overjoyed.  It may not have been the best Connery Bond film but it was still excellent escapist fun.

In 1973 Roger Moore took over the role of Bond.  I like Moore but his style was just a little too tongue-in-cheek for my taste at the time.  His 1970s Bond films, Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me (my favorite of the run) and Moonraker were good films, but not great films, in my opinion.

There were too many gadgets, gimmicky getaways and glib gabbing.  The women however.  Ahh, the women.  The Bond Women of that era were gorgeous and you can see them all in 007 Double - O - Seven Magazine Archive Files: The James Bond Girls #2 The 1970s from each film in candid shots, studio stills and behind-the-scenes photos.

Included with each film synopsis and interesting Bond facts are lots and lots of photos of not only the women but the other key characters, locations and much, much more form each film.  Jill St. John as Tiffany Case from Diamonds Are Forever shows off her package on the cover while on the back cover Britt Exland as Mary Goodnight from The Man With The Golden Gun shows off her 'ample talent'.

The James Bond Girls
File #1 The 1960s

To me the best James Bond films were the ones made in the 1960s.  Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty's Secret Service were the ultimate expression of the excessive 1960s.

Perhaps the biggest draw of all of the movies, besides the film's star Sean Connery (sorry George), was the women.  James Bond women were 'bigger' than life (forgive the pun), sexy, seductive, vulnerable but strong, innocent and yet provocative and almost surreal in their femininity.

007 Double - O - Seven Magazine Archive Files: The James Bond Girls #1 The 1960s, looks at the Bond feminine phenomenon. Resplendent with black and white and color photographs of some of the most beautiful women ever seen on the movie screen, the magazine is a visual gallery of gorgeous gals.

A synopsis of each of the aforementioned films is provided including insights and behind-the-scenes information about each movie.  Captioned photos briefly describe each female role.  I really enjoyed reading about each movie and I learned a few new facts and secrets about each film.

It's a beautiful magazine filled with high gloss photos and printed on heavy paper stock with enticing full-color front and back photo covers of Daniela Bianchi and Claudine Auger.
