Trading Cards By Tim Grubbs With the upcoming release of the new Star Wars Clone Wars CGI-Animated movie, it’s only natural that will be dozens of products scheduled to cash-in on the movie’s inevitable popularity. Acton figures, comic books, and a television series are just a few of the planned tie-ins. Trading Cards often get lost in the mix as children (the target audience) tend to be more interested in the products they can play with, namely toys. Still, the new Star Wars Clone Wars Movie Trading Cards from Topps are worth getting into for people who have yet to see the movie and would like a preview of the art and story behind Lucas’s newest chapter in the Star Wars saga. The Trading Cards start with a short subset of character cards that provide profiles for all of the important characters in the movie. This helps fans learn about some of the interesting new characters introduced in Clone Wars, such as Seperatist General Whorm Loathsom, Ziro the Hutt (Jabba the Hutt’s uncle), and Rotta the Huttlet (Jabba’s small son). After that, the rest of the series is made up of scenes from the movie which summarize the story beginning with a battle on a Seperatist-controlled planet and leading to the rescue of Jabba the Hutt’s son from female Sith wannabe Asajj Ventress, one of the major characters from the original Clone Wars animated series. In the box I got, I ended up with one full set of the regular series and a partial set. As with other trading card sets, Clone Wars has three chase card sets that die-hard collectors will want to get their hands on. The case sets are Artist Sketch Cards (which I got one of), Sequentially Numbered Foil versions of the regular card (which I also got one of), and very nice Animation Cell cards (which I ended up with 4 of the 10 totals cards in that subset). If you are a hardcore Star Wars fan, you should definitely check out the
new Clone Wars trading cards. They
will give you a taste for the movie and further build your anticipation for
it.
Of The Earth 3D Inkworks decided to put a little more dimension into their latest set of trading cards. With two 3D glasses in each box, Inkwork's Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D trading cards, with images taken from the new movie of the same name, takes trading cards into a whole new dimension--3D! Put on your glasses to experience a whole new kind of trading cad enjoyment. Five cards come per pack with 24 packs per box. One Pieceworks card is guaranteed per box (I got a piece of Brendan Fraser's (Trevor) shirt). Fifty cards make up to base set (I got two) and a collector's binder is available that contains a Forgotten World uncut sheet puzzle. Randomly inserted bonus cards include 9 Forgotten World (2 in my packs), 6
Challenging the Unknown (1) and 3 Prehistoric Perils (1 again). Case loader bonus cards are
available. Take a journey like no
other, courtesy of Inkworks.
Of all the Stargate series, movie, live-action or animated, the original series is my favorite. Teal'c, Samantha, Jack and Samuel will always be my favorite team, but the replacement team in later episodes were still a good team. Sadly, Stargate:SG-1 finished its original run at the ten year mark. The Ark Of Truth is the first of SG-1 straight-to-DVD movies-it was good! Rittenhouse Archives (Sci-Fi Hobby) has compiled an impressive set of cards with images taken directly from the 10th Season. Seventy two cards make up the base set with five cards per pack and 24 packs per box (I assembled a full set, with a large dent toward another). Rittenhouse pours on the randomly inserted, special, bonus cards commemorating the last season of the popular show. Two Autograph cards (mine are Christopher Judge and Tim Guinee) and two Costume cards (Dr. Lam and Sal) cards guaranteed per box. Other bonus cards include Ark Of truth (3 out of 18), Women Of Stargate (3 again), Film Clip Gallery (Teal'c) and Stargate Patch (Colonel Jack O'Neill). It's a remarkable set of cards dedicated to a remarkable science fiction TV show.
Battlestar Galactica And Star Trek Rittenhouse caught me up with their trading card releases for this year by sending two sets of trading cards released previously this year. The Third Season of Battlestar Galactica is captured in a 63 card base set with randomly inserted bonus cards that are sure to satisfy BG fans. The bonus cards I received were Autograph cards (two guaranteed per box) (I got Bill Duke and Christian Tessier), one guaranteed Costume card per box (Simon's suit), 7 Significant Seven (3 for me), 9 Love Of War (2), 9 Film Clip Gallery (Laura Roslin) and 3 Shelter Posters (1). Rittenhouse's Star Trek 40th Anniversary Series 1 was a runaway hit that sold out completely. Rittenhouse has released a Second Series and it's as every bit as good as the First. Three Autograph cards come per box (mine are Michael Dante, Celeste Yarnall and Dave Somerville), 27 Portraits (3), 9 Charlie X (1), 18 Where No Man Has Gone Before Expansion Set (2) and 18 Stickers (Kirk and Sulu). What do you get when you combine two handsome brothers, the supernatural and cross-country travel? That’s easy, Supernatural—the story of two brothers who search for and confront supernatural evil in all its myriad forms. Inkworks presents its latest Supernatural trading card collection with Supernatural Connection, an ultra-premium 72-card base set trading cards set focusing on the first three season of the popular show. Follow the Winchester brothers as they fight the hordes of Hell. Inkworks has assembled a set of cards that connects characters and events over the series’ run. The cards are on heavy coated stock, use images from the series and frame each picture in foil borders. Special bonus, randomly inserted cards come in the five cards per pack, 24 packs per box with each box guaranteed to have on Autograph Card (I got Jim Beaver as buddy Singer) and one Pieceworks Card (I received a piece of Andrea Barr skirt). Other bonus cards include nine Fear No Evil Cards (two for me0, six Road
To Run (one) and three Becoming Cards (one again). Retailer incentive cards are available, a Devil In Me Card
comes in each box and a collector binder can be ordered. |
